Witu Coconut Farmers Association Incorporated (Inc).
Witu Coconut Farmers Association consist of all the growers (about 10,000-15,000) all over Witu Island within the Wards 5, 6, and 7 of the Witu and Bali Local Level Government within the Talasea District, WNBP.
It is an initiative drawn from the majority of coconut farmers who after more than thirty plus years of struggle and sacrifice, expressed a need for concerted and collaborative approach in elevating this commodity to a level that is productive and maximized volume, hence only then can have its monetary impact as well.
Formally registered as Witu Coconut, the name doesn’t exclude other commodities cultivated on the Island. The Association as an over-arching entity, it also defines and is accommodative of other commodities grown and processed on Witu, specifically cash crops like Cocoa, Vanilla, Coffee and Balsa etc. The Association will also diversify into other newly introduced cash crops that see fitting and relevant to the changing times and needs of growers.
The fundamental reasons for its existence being the plights of many of us farmers on the Island in regards to good market and high transportation costs. The price value of the commodity is of a significant concern as well.
Since Cocoa and Coconuts had been farmed for more than ten (10) decades on the Islands of Witu (and Bali), we haven’t really adequately enjoyed the sustainable impact of many of the returns of these commodities till current. Thus, registering the farmers under such an association will enable farmers to rise up to another level higher, which through a recognized established body it will drive and fare the concerns and issues of farmers to fore.
The establishment of the Witu Coconut Farmers is all about the Welfare of the Farmers. The primary objectives of the Farmers’ Association is to address issues affecting farmers in relation to the commodity management and its benefits for the last 30-40 years.
